A major reduction in noise-related problems caused by freight trains. That is the aim of the Whispering Train Pilot Project – a joint initiative by the Netherlands’ Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, Lloyd's Register Rail Europe, ProRail and a number of freight transport companies. The Whispering Train Project is quite unique: the first practical attempt to cut noise from freight trains ‘at source’, by making changes to rolling stock wheels. What is more, the trains will remain in normal commercial service throughout that time. The primary objective of the project is to cut the noise from a freight train by between 7 and 10 decibels. A reduction of 10 dB(A) would mean that a train sounded only half as loud to people. The first pilot within the Whispering train project is the Dolomite shuttle - a serving freight train, which has been specially modified with new wheels, wheel dampers and brakes. Till mid 2007 the noise produced by the Dolomite shuttle will be carefully monitored. In the middle of 2006, 3 pilots were started using a new type of brake block on different types of freight wagons.
